Why iron sits at the centre of women's hematology
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, and it falls disproportionately on women — affecting up to 22.6% of U.S. females aged 12–49 (CDC). Menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth each draw down iron stores faster than diet replaces them, which is why so much of our women's health work is really iron work. Crucially, stored iron empties long before hemoglobin falls, so a woman can be symptomatically deficient while a standard blood count reads as normal. Asking for a ferritin level is often the difference between an answer and another year of unexplained fatigue.
